Liberal Arts and Sciences

The College offers one degree, basic and advanced transfer certificates, and nine letters of recognition in liberal arts and science curricula, in addition to its program offerings in education.

The Associate of Arts (AA) degree program is designed to meet transfer requirements for a variety of possible majors at four-year institutions. The flexibility of this program makes it an ideal choice for students preparing for most careers requiring graduate or professional training, as well as for those interested in the liberal arts and sciences.

The College’s Certificate options focus on a sequence of courses at the intermediate and advanced levels in the student’s chosen curriculum. Most certificate programs are designed to build upon skills and sequence into degree curricula. Certificate programs include at least 12 credits and typically take a minimum of a year to complete.

The Letter of Recognition (LOR) programs include a specific sequence of courses that total no more than 11 credits. These programs are designed to broaden background knowledge and skills in a designated discipline and can be completed in the shortest period of time.

Liberal Arts and Sciences

The AA degree program in Liberal Arts and Sciences is designed for students who intend to transfer to four-year colleges or universities and continue their studies in specific arts and sciences fields. Students should acquaint themselves with the requirements of the major department at the college or university to which transfer is contemplated and also consult with an academic advisor in planning an appropriate program.  The pathways included here provide examples of recommended program and free electives that will complement the general LAS Degree.

The Transfer Certificates are designed for students who intend to transfer to a four-year institution prior to completing a program of study at Chesapeake College. These flexible programs are also appropriate for students who are undecided upon a  major.

The Letter of Recognition in African-American Studies is designed to provide all students with the opportunity to study the history and contributions of African-Americans to society in a variety of disciplines. Students will select three of the four courses required to complete the program.

The Letters of Recognition programs in Basic Chemistry, Biology, Communications, General Science, Geography, and Mathematics are designed to provide basic knowledge and skills in a specific discipline for effective workplace, academic or life applications. These programs can serve to acknowledge a student’s success in a focused area of study and can be used as building blocks toward completion of a certificate or degree program.

The two Letter of Recognition programs in Music is designed to aid employability in musical fields and to broaden appropriate musical skills. The program is also designed to prepare students to transfer into a four-year music program of study.
