Phlebotomy Letter of Recognition (515)

Award: Letter of Recognition

Program Mission: The Chesapeake College Phlebotomy Program is designed to prepare students for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) exam for certification, and for employment as hospital phlebotomists or in any profession that employs phlebotomists.

Program Description: The Letter of Recognition Program in Phlebotomy is designed to prepare students for certification and for employment as phlebotomists. Enrollment in this curriculum is limited by the availability of clinical facilities. 

Program Goals: The Phlebotomy Letter of Recognition program will:

  • Provide students with the skills to perform phlebotomy procedures as required to meet certification standards.
  • Prepare students to perform procedures ethically, safely, and legally.
  • Prepare students to pass the ASCP certification exam.
  • Prepare students for entry-level employment as a phlebotomist or for further study in the field.

Admissions Criteria: Class size is limited to 12 students per semester. Students are admitted based on the order the program application is received and successfully meeting the eligibility requirements. Students MUST have a GED or a high school diploma to enter the Phlebotomy Program. Priority is given to applicants that live in the college’s five (5) county service region. 

Admission Requirements:

  1. High school graduation or equivalent (official transcripts required).
  2. Current Chesapeake College student. Submit a college application if it has been more than 3 semesters sicne attending classes or have never been a Chesapeake College student. 
  3. Completion of the College’s placement exams in Arithmetic (score of 230) & Reading Comprehension (score of 240), administered through the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Services, or transcripts for college-level success in Math or English (which includes the completion of an Associate’s degree or higher). 
  4. Completion of any remedial math or English requirements prior to applying for entrance into the program (if needed).
  5. Submit the program appilcation provided online on the Phlebotomy Program webpage. 

Note: Traditional financial aid is not available for Letter of Recognition programs. However, applicants may qualify for funding under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

Post Admission Requirements:

  1. Criminal background check required. 
  2. Submission of a health examination completed by a physician, including documentation of immune status, vision test results, ppd tuberculin test results, and shot record indicating immunization for hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria, and COVID-19.
  3. Completion of Health Profession Compliance Training Modules (Canvas) for clinical participation.

Physical Standards:

  1. May be required to lift 10 pounds.
  2. Must be able to move rapidly from one location to another in such physical settings as the clinical laboratory, patient rooms, emergency centers, elevators, and stairways.
  3. Vision must be 20/30 or better, with corrective lenses.
  4. Hearing must fall within normal ranges with or without corrective aids.
  5. Use their hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  6. Repeat the same movements.
  7. Stand for long periods of time.

Personal Characteristics Desired:

  1. Must be able to communicate effectively in spoken English. Must be able to comprehend and respond to both formal and colloquial English directly and by phone.
  2. Must be willing to adhere to established codes of moderation for dress, appearance and personal hygiene.
  3. Must have the ability to maintain composure in difficult circumstances.
  4. Must be able to relate to a wide variety of people representing a broad physical, psychological, cultural or socioeconomic spectrum.
  5. Must be responsible, reliable, and honest.
