Surgical Technology Certificate (512)

Program Mission: The Chesapeake College Surgical Technology Certificate prepares students to be an integral member of the surgical team in the operating room. Students who successfully complete the certificate are eligible to sit for the national certification exam offered by the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

Program Description: The Surgical Technology Certificate is an 11-month program, including the summer session. Through classroom instruction and clinical field work, students cover surgical ASEPSIS and the preparation and use of the operating room and its equipment. As members of the surgical team, they will work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel delivering quality patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery.

Enrollment in this curriculum is limited by the availability of clinical facilities. In addition to the scholastic standards required of all students enrolled in the College, surgical technology students must achieve a grade of “C” or better in each required BIO and SGT course in order to continue in and graduate from this program. Students should consult with the College’s Admissions Office or the Nursing and Allied Health Advisor in planning an appropriate program.

Program Goals: The Surgical Technology Certificate program will:

  • Prepare students for the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting examination.
  • Prepare students for entry-level employment as a surgical technologist and for further study in the field.

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Apply appropriate medical terminology in the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care of the patient.
  • Apply the principles of basic anatomy, physiology, and microbiology as related to the operative patient.
  • Apply the principles of aseptic technique in a clinical setting.
  • Prepare the supplies, equipment and sterile surgical instruments for surgical procedures.
  • Employ strategies to be an integral member of the operating room team.
  • Evaluate professional responsibilities concerning ethical issues that may be present in a surgical technology environment.

Admission Requirements:

  1. Students must be college ready in both math and English or complete all developmental requirements prior to admission into the program
  2. Students must have completed biology in high school within the last three years or complete BIO 101 , Fundamentals of Biology, prior to admission into the program.

Admission Procedures:

  1. Apply for admission to Chesapeake College.
  2. Request program information and application from the College’s Center for Allied Health or at www.chesapeake.edu/alliedhealth
  3. Completion of the College’s Academic Skills Assessment (ASA) administered through the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Services.
  4. Obtain a copy of your official high school transcript.
  5. Contact the Nursing and Allied Health Advisor for an appointment to review the high school transcript and assessment recommendations.
  6. Complete any remedial coursework required prior to application for admission into the Surgical Technology Program. BIO 101 , Fundamentals of Biology, must be taken if biology was not taken in high school).
  7. By March 1 of the year you wish to enter the program, send to the Program Director a program application, a letter requesting admission into the program, and two detailed letters of personal recommendation (employer, teacher, friend, doctor, or minister).
  8. The Program Director will contact the applicant to set up an appointment to review the application.
  9. Letters of acceptance will be issued by May 5.
  10. The Program begins in the summer semester.

Laboratory science courses taken 10 or more years prior to application for admission will not be considered. Individuals working in a medical or related field may appeal to the Surgical Technology Program Director.

Field work, clinical placements, and certification/licensure may involve drug testing and/or background checks performed at the student’s expense.
