Criminal Justice

The College offers three degree and four certificate programs in criminal justice curricula.

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree recognizes curricular focus in a specific occupational area. This degree is intended primarily for immediate employment or occupational skills upgrading, but also provides opportunities for transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree.

The College’s Certificate options focus on a sequence of courses in the student’s chosen curriculum. Most certificate programs are designed to build upon skills and sequence into degree curricula. Certificate programs include at least 12 credits and typically take a minimum of a year to complete.

Criminal Justice

The AAS degree in Criminal Justice is designed to prepare and/or upgrade students’ skills in areas such as: criminal justice, techniques of criminal investigation, principles of criminal law, law enforcement administration, corrections, criminology and field work. In addition to courses in criminal justice, students will also take courses in related areas and in general education.

The Certificates in Corrections, Law Enforcement, and Crime Scene Technician are designed to prepare students for entry-level employment and advancement in the fields of law enforcement or crime scene investigations. Students may progress to the related associate of applied science degree programs.

- NOTICE -

Completion of these programs is not a prerequisite for entry into a police academy nor does it provide complete entry-level training for work as a county or state police officer.

Students who successfully complete the AAS in Criminal Justice at Chesapeake College may be eligible to continue taking courses to complete their bachelor’s degree at the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center, located on the College’s Wye Mills campus. The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers courses in Criminal Justice at the Center. Students should work closely with the Chesapeake College Transfer Counselor in scheduling classes.
