The College offers eight degree, eight certificate, and one letter of recognition programs in nursing and other health related curricula.
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree recognizes curricular focus in a specific occupational area. This degree is intended primarily for immediate employment or occupational skills upgrading, but also provides opportunities for transfer to a four-year institution to complete a Bachelor’s degree.
The Associate of Arts (AA) and the Associate of Science (AS) degrees are intended primarily for transfer to a bachelor’s degree program, but may also be suitable for career exploration and skills upgrading. The degree programs include discipline and general education courses, range from 60-70 credits, and typically take a minimum of two years to complete.
The College’s Certificate options focus on a sequence of courses at the intermediate and advanced levels in the student’s chosen curriculum. Most certificate programs are designed to build upon skills and sequence into degree curricula. Certificate programs include at least 12 credits and typically take a minimum of a year to complete.
Letter of Recognition (LOR) programs include a specific sequence of courses that total no more than 11 credits. These programs can be completed in the shortest period of time.
Allied Health
The General College Studies AA degree - with emphasis in Allied Health program is designed for persons who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree program in allied health fields. Among the allied health fields appropriate to this program are nursing, dental hygiene, pre-med, physical therapy, and radiologic science. The College’s Transfer Advisor can provide additional information regarding the transfer requirements of institutions within the University of Maryland System.Emergency Medical Services
Emergency Services
The Emergency Medical Services AAS degree program provides an opportunity for EMT certified individuals to acquire the paramedic skills necessary to sit for the national certification and state protocol examinations for paramedics.
The Emergency Medical Services Certificate program is offered over five semesters (18 months) and provides an opportunity for EMT certified individuals to acquire the paramedic skills necessary to sit for the national certification and state protocol examinations for paramedics.
The Nationally Registered Paramedic Certificate is a one-year program of study which provides an opportunity for EMT-Intermediate or CRT licensed individuals to acquire paramedic skills necessary to take the national certification and state protocol examinations for paramedics.
The Cardiac Rescue Technician Certificate is a two-semester, 11-month program designed to provide an opportunity for EMT certified individuals to acquire Cardiac Rescue Technician skills necessary to sit for the national certification and state protocol examinations for CRT.Exercise Science
Health/Fitness & Exercise Science
Exercise Science
The Health, Fitness & Exercise Science: Exercise Science AA Degree is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to prepare for transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree in exercise science. Students majoring in this field examine the relationship between exercise and human performance in preparation for eventual employment in careers such as exercise/fitness specialist, personal trainer, etc. in a variety of academic, community or corporate settings.
The AA Degree in Exercise Science/Allied Health provides students with the knowledge and skills to prepare for transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree in exercise science with an emphasis in Allied Health. This option is design to prepare students for eventual employment in hospital or clinical-based health care settings.
The Advanced and Basic Certificates serve to acknowledge a student’s success in the area of study and can be used as building blocks toward degree completion or transfer.
Sport Management
TheSport Management AA Degree program provides students with the knowledge and skills to prepare for transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree in Sport Management. This program prepares students for eventual employment in a wide variety of sport settings including recreation management, sport facility/event management, etc.
The Advanced and Basic Certificates are designed to prepare students for transfer or for eventual entry-level employment in the field of sport management. Certificates serve to acknowledge a student’s success in the area of study and can be used as building blocks toward degree completion or transfer.
Nursing
The AS degree in Nursing is designed to prepare students for Maryland State licensure eligibility and to obtain entry-level positions with an opportunity for career advancement. Graduates of the Chesapeake College/MGW Nursing Program are accountable, adaptable generalists prepared with the knowledge and skills to enter the practice of nursing in a variety of settings and continue study at the baccalaureate level.
The LPN to RN Transition Option provides a unique opportunity for qualified licensed practical nurses (LPN) to enter the Nursing Program with advanced standing once admission and general education requirements have been met.
Phlebotomy
The Letter of Recognition in Phlebotomy is designed to prepare students for the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) Certification and for employment as hospital phlebotomists or in any profession that employs phlebotomists.
Physical Therapist Assistant
The Physical Therapist Assistant AAS degree program prepares students to provide physical therapy services according to the plan of care developed by the physical therapist. Graduates are eligible to take the state licensing exam for Physical Therapist Assistants.
This program is offered through the Chesapeake Area Consortium for Higher Education. Students complete their general education course work at Chesapeake College, their professional training at Anne Arundel Community College, and their clinical internship locally.
Radiologic Sciences
The Radiologic Sciences AAS degree program is designed to prepare graduates for entry-level radiography employment in hospitals, outpatient clinics, physicians’ offices, and other health care settings. Graduates who have completed program requirements will be eligible to write the certifying examination given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Certification by the ARRT is required for Maryland licensure.
Surgical Technology
The Certificate in Surgical Technology program is designed to prepare students to become integral members of the surgical team. Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam offered by The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
Students who successfully complete the A.S. in Nursing and become a licensed registered nurse may be eligible to complete their RN to Bachelors of Science in Nursing through Stevenson University at the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center.
