Distance Learning
Online and Hybrid Classes
Chesapeake College offers a variety of online learning opportunities to fit students’ needs and schedules. Selected classes are totally online, requiring no visits to the campus. Many others are taught 90% online, requiring students to be on campus only for events such as a course orientation or important exams. Hybrid classes meet half the time online and half the time in a scheduled campus classroom.
Before signing up for online courses, students should consider whether online learning is right for them. Online classes achieve the same outcomes and cover the same material as their face-to-face equivalents. However, online classes often require more reading, writing, and computer skills. Successful online students are typically self-disciplined, and able to keep up with deadlines and manage their time well. Chesapeake College offers an online self-test to help students decide whether they are good candidates for online learning. The SmarterMeasures self-test is free and takes about 30 minutes to complete. It may be accessed at http://chesapeake.readi.info with the username chesapeake and the password student. Students who take this self-test receive confidential feedback via email.
Interactive Videoconference Classes
In addition to courses taught in traditional, online, and in hybrid settings, the college offers selected classes to multiple sites using classrooms equipped with interactive videoconferencing systems. These special classrooms on the Wye Mills, Cambridge, and Easton campuses can also connect to similar classrooms in other Maryland community colleges.

Currently, the College offers two degree and two certificate programs that may be taken fully online by selecting the appropriate courses:

Non-Traditional Study
Independent Study*
Under certain circumstances, a student may be permitted to register for a course that is listed in the College’s Catalog but not scheduled in the designated semester (i.e., fall or spring). Independent study will be considered only if the class is required for graduation during the given academic year and was either cancelled or not offered by the College; or if extenuating circumstances prevented the student from registering for the regularly scheduled section of the course. Requests for independent study must include sufficient documentation of need and must be approved by the faculty member providing supervision, the Dean for Faculty and Teaching, and the Vice President for Workforce and Academic Programs. The student must have a grade point average of 2.5 to be eligible. Verification of eligibility will be determined by the Registrar. Independent study courses must be completed within the semester for which the student has registered.
Students seeking independent study should first contact the supervising faculty member.
Non-Collegiate Courses*
Credit may be obtained for non-collegiate courses or testing programs at the post-secondary level in accordance with THE NATIONAL GUIDE TO CREDIT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NON-COLLEGIATE COURSES from the American Council on Education (ACE), Washington, D.C. (latest edition).
Special Study—299*
It is possible for students to enroll for special study in an area not otherwise offered in the College Catalog. A student enrolling in this course must contract to take the course with an instructor. The student must receive approval from the instructor, Dean for Faculty and Teaching, and the Vice President for Workforce and Academic Programs. The student must be a sophomore with at least a 3.0 grade point average or must possess at least an associate’s degree. Certification of eligibility will be determined by the Registrar. The Special Study must be completed within the semester or session for which the student is registered.
*Note: Students enrolling part- or full-time in any of the non-traditional studies listed above will be charged tuition and fees at the regular rate.
