Program Mission: The Chesapeake College Welding Advanced Certificate is designed to prepare students for immediate employment as a certified welder, welding technician, or intermediate welder. Completing this program will prepare students to pass most of the AWS certification exams. Chesapeake College is an Educational Institution Member of the American Welding Society.
Program Description: The Welding Advanced Certificate provides students with the skills and knowledge to understand and operate most welding equipment including stick welders (SMAW), MIG (GMAW), and TIG (GTAW). Students will be able to prepare and weld various metals including pipe in all positions. Hands-on shop experiences comprise the major portion of the instruction, as well as preparation for AWS certification. Safety is stressed throughout the program. Students should consult with the College’s Admissions Office or an academic advisor in planning an appropriate program.
Program Goals: The Advanced Welding Certificate program will:
- Promote technical competencies, professional knowledge and ethical responsibilities.
- Employ and promote safety standards in the workplace.
- Prepare students for employment in the welding profession or for further study in the field.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Operate and safely use basic welding hand tools and equipment in a safe manner.
- Operate oxy-fuel cutting and brazing equipment safely.
- Use blueprint reading skills, cost estimating, applied science of materials, and mathematics necessary to the profession.
- Set up and operate manual and semi-automatic welding and cutting equipment used in the metal fabrication industry.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the four major processes.
- Develop critical thinking skills to demonstrate various welding processes.
- Use reading and writing skills to explain various welding processes.
- Develop a sense of personal, social, and professional work ethics.
- Explain a variety of testing and inspection methods and why they are used
