Award: Letter of Recognition

Program Mission: The Chesapeake College Phlebotomy Letter of Recognition prepares students for the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) Certification Exam and for employment in any profession that employs phlebotomists.

Program Description: The Letter of Recognition Program in Phlebotomy is designed to prepare students for certification and for employment as phlebotomists. Enrollment in this curriculum is limited by the availability of clinical facilities. Students should consult with the College’s Admissions Office or the Nursing and Allied Health Advisor in planning an appropriate program.

Program Goals: The Phlebotomy Letter of Recognition program will:

  • Provide students with the skills to perform phlebotomy procedures as required to meet certification standards.
  • Prepare students to perform procedures ethically, safely, and legally.
  • Prepare students to pass the ASPT certification exam.
  • Prepare students for entry-level employment as a phlebotomist or for further study in the field.

Admissions Criteria: Class size is limited to 15 students. Priority in the selection process will be given to applicants who have the highest high school grade point average and previous experience providing medical patient care.

Admission Requirements:

  1. High school graduation or equivalent (official transcripts required).
  2. Apply for admission to Chesapeake College.
  3. Completion of the College’s placement exams in English, reading, and mathematics administered through the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Services.
  4. Completion of any remedial requirements prior to applying for entrance into the program.
  5. Request program application at www.chesapeake.edu/alliedhealth or from the College’s Center for Allied Health.
  6. Submission of a program application to the Phlebotomy Program Director. Students enter the program only in the fall semester. Applications must be submitted by March 31 of each year. Acceptance letters will be sent by June 30.

Note: Traditional financial aid is not available for Letter of Recognition programs. However, applicants may qualify for funding under the Workforce Investment Act.

Post Admission Requirements:

  1. Submission of proof of American Heart Association CPR certification for Healthcare Providers.
  2. Submission of a health record completed by a physician, including documentation of immune status, vision test results, ppd tuberculin test results, and shot record indicating immunization for hepatitis B, tetanus, and diphtheria.
  3. Completion of clinical orientation online courses through Learning Harbor.

Physical Standards:

  1. Must be able to communicate effectively in spoken English. Must be able to comprehend and respond to both formal and colloquial English directly and by telephone.
  2. May be required to lift 10 pounds.
  3. Must be able to move rapidly from one location to another in such physical settings as the clinical laboratory, patient rooms, emergency centers, elevators, and stairways.
  4. Vision must be 20/30 or better, with corrective lenses.
  5. Hearing must fall within normal ranges with or without corrective aids.

Personal Characteristics Desired:

  1. Must be willing to adhere to established codes of moderation for dress and appearance.
  2. Must have the ability to maintain composure in difficult circumstances.
  3. Must be able to relate to a wide variety of people.
  4. Must be responsible, reliable, and honest.
