COM 140 - Intercultural Communications Meets a General Education requirement A course emphasizing the influence of culture on the communication process, including differences in values, systems, and communication rules. This course introduces the basic issues of communication between people with different cultural backgrounds, and focuses on applying theories from anthropology, linguistics, and communication to intercultural and interpersonal communication. In addition, the course examines potential sources of conflict arising from these differences, and explores the development of greater cultural competence and more effective and sensitive communication between cultures. Students can also expect to engage in in-class exercises, activities, and discussions regarding everyday encounters with people from different socio-economic (class) backgrounds, racial, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender, physical abilities and religious belief systems.3 credits [AS NEEDED] Three hours lecture per week.
