Program Mission:
The mission of the Surgical Technology program at Chesapeake College is to prepare the Surgical Technology students to be an integral part of the surgical team in the operating room. This program will set high standards for students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills required to become an integral member of the surgical team. Students will function safely, effectively and efficiently in the Surgical Technologist role.
Program Description:
The Surgical Technology Program – Students are educated through classroom instruction and clinical field work specifically to assist in surgical procedures. Students will learn surgical techniques and essential skills needed in the surgical environment. Students will also learn the preparation and use of the operating room equipment and surgical instruments. The surgical technologist with the development of a surgical conscience will provide the surgical patient with the highest standards of care preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative.
Enrollment in this curriculum is limited by the availability of clinical facilities. In addition to the scholastic standards required of all students enrolled in the College, surgical technology students must achieve a grade of “C” or better in each required BIO and SGT course in order to continue in and graduate from this program.
Program Goals: The Surgical Technology program will:
- Apply principles of ethics, safety, teamwork and patient advocacy to the role of the surgical technologist.
- Demonstrate understanding of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology as they relate to the surgical patient.
- Identify and demonstrate principles of asepsis and sterile technique.
- Select prepare and utilize all required instrumentation, supplies and equipment. Assess and anticipate needs of the patient and surgical team during all phases of operative care.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the understanding and the responsibility of the surgical conscience that puts the safety and well-being of the surgical patient first.
- Combine knowledge from general education and surgical science with critical thinking skills to problem solve while functioning as a surgical technologist.
- Apply a basic understanding of human physiology and surgical anatomy and the use of appropriate medical terminology in the preoperative, intraoperative, post-operative care of the patient.
- Demonstrate the ability to think critically and communicate effectively.
- Demonstrate responsibility, self-discipline, and teamwork.
- Prepares the supplies, equipment, and sterile surgical instrumentation for the surgical procedures.
Admissions Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Graduation from an accredited high school or an GED certificate
- Apply for admission to Chesapeake College
- Submit original transcripts from all institutions previously attended
- Complete the college’s academic skills assessment administered through the office of student success and enrollment services
- Completion of any remedial course work as needed
- Completion of BIO103 (or BIO 111), 211,212,202; ENG 101; MAT 107 (or MAT 113 or MAT 204); and completion of all other G.Ed. needed
- Completion of MED 106
- Grade point average of 2.0 in all BIO course
Admission Procedures:
- Request application and information packet
- Submit application for the surgical technology program with a letter of intent to the program director by March 31 the year you wish to enter the program.
- Submit two letters of personal recommendation ( employer, teacher, friend, doctor, or minister) to the program director
- The program director will call and set up and interview with the applicant prior to being excepted into the program. (please make sure your phone number is up to date)
- Once accepted into the program you must have a criminal background check and drug screening.
- Student accepted into the program must have a health record completed by a physician. (health form will be provided)
- Before entering any clinical site students must have proof of American Heart Association CPR certification for the healthcare providers
