Program Mission: The Chesapeake College Environmental Monitoring Certificate prepares students with prior preparation in mathematics and science for careers in an environmental science field. This certificate is offered through the Chesapeake Area Consortium of Higher Education (CACHE) Institute for Environmental Careers, which consists of four Chesapeake Bay area community colleges – Anne Arundel Community College, Chesapeake College, College of Southern Maryland, and Wor-Wic Community College. Students may take courses, as appropriate, at any of the four participating community colleges.

Program Description: This Environmental Monitoring Certificate was designed to expand educational opportunities to address current and emerging environmental issues. The program provides training opportunities for students seeking immediate employment in an environmental science field that promotes the management, conservation and protection of natural environment and resources. This program of study is designed for students with prior preparation in math and science. Students should consult with the College’s Admissions Office or an academic advisor in planning an appropriate program.

Program Goals: The Environmental Monitoring Certificate program will:

  • Expand education opportunities to address current and emerging environmental issues of Maryland and the country.
  • Prepare students for entry into the workforce in an environmental science career field that promotes the management, conservation, and protection of the natural environment and resources.

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Apply the principles of mathematics, science, and engineering to monitor natural and environmental resources.
  • Use management applications to manage, conserve, and protect environmental resources.

Fall Semester II


Minimum Required Credits: 28


To be Taken at Anne Arundel Community College:


  • BIO 210 - Principles of Ecology & Environmental Assessment 4 credits
  • BIO 215 - Restoration Ecology 3 credits

Note:  These courses are not currently offered at Chesapeake College, but may be taken at one of the other participating CACHE colleges and honored by Chesapeake College in the certificate curriculum.  Students may be required to pay out-of-county tuition for courses taken at other institutions.
